openHAB

openHAB — A vendor and technology agnostic open source automation software for your home

Visit openHAB

openHAB is an open-source home automation platform that acts as a vendor- and technology-agnostic integration hub. It solves the problem of managing devices and systems from different manufacturers that otherwise cannot communicate with each other. By running on the user’s own hardware, openHAB keeps all data local and does not require a cloud service, while optional cloud connectors allow integration with platforms like Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit.

The software is built in Java on Apache Karaf (OSGi) and uses a pluggable architecture with over 400 bindings for different technologies and thousands of supported devices. Its core abstraction is the “item,” which represents a capability independently of the underlying hardware, making it easy to swap devices without changing rules or user interfaces. Features include a powerful rule engine with time- and event-based triggers, scripts, actions, notifications, and voice control. openHAB runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, Raspberry Pi, Docker, and Synology, and can be accessed via web, iOS, and Android apps. The openHABian image provides a pre-configured setup for Raspberry Pi and similar devices.

openHAB is designed for tech-savvy users who are willing to invest time in learning its concepts and performing textual configuration. It is not a plug-and-play commercial product, but once set up, it is stable and usable by all household members. As an open-source project maintained by the openHAB Foundation, it is free to use and does not have paid editions, plans, or seat-based licensing. Users run the software on their own hardware without any mandatory subscription.
