Calaos

Open source home automation software for controlling and monitoring your home.

Visit Calaos

Calaos is an open-source home automation software project, released under the GPLv3 license, that enables users to control and monitor their home. It originated from a French company of the same name; when the company closed in 2013, the code base was open-sourced and a community continued development. The project solves the problem of providing a free, self-hosted platform for automating lighting, shutters, music, and other home systems without relying on proprietary services.

The software stack includes a core server application, a touchscreen user interface called Calaos Home, an HTML5 web app, a configuration tool named Calaos Installer, and mobile apps for iOS and Android. It also offers Calaos-OS, a full Linux operating system image with everything preconfigured. The system supports hardware such as Wago PLCs, Raspberry Pi, Intel 32-bit and 64-bit machines, Zodianet's ZiBASE, Cubieboard, and Squeezebox. Users can create automated scenarios based on time, ambience, or mood, and control music across multiple rooms.

Calaos is designed for DIY users and home automation enthusiasts who want to install and manage their own system. The project is free and open-source, with no mention of paid plans or editions. The community provides support through a wiki, forum, and Discord server, and accepts donations to maintain servers and develop hardware support.
