Haiku

An open source OS targeting speed and personal computing.

Visit Haiku

Haiku is an open source operating system for personal computing, developed by a single team that writes the kernel, drivers, userland services, tool kit, graphics stack, and included desktop applications and preflets. It is inspired by the Be Operating System and aims to provide a consistent, responsive environment for end-users and developers.

The system features a custom kernel designed for responsiveness, a fully threaded design for multi-processor and multi-core CPUs, a rich object-oriented API, and a database-like file system (BFS) with indexed metadata support. It offers a unified, cohesive interface, and the project maintains documentation including a user guide, guides, and release notes.

Haiku is aimed at computer users of all levels, as well as developers. It is released under an open source license and is free to use. The project publishes regular releases, including beta versions and nightly images for testing, with nightly builds noted as potentially unstable.
