Apache James

Emails at the heart of your business logic

Visit Apache James

Apache James is a modular, open-source mail server platform written in Java and Scala that runs on the JVM. It lets administrators assemble email processing components through an Inversion of Control platform and define custom filtering and routing rules using the Mailet container, addressing the need for a configurable mail server built from interchangeable parts.

The platform supports SMTP, LMTP, POP3, IMAP, ManageSieve, and JMAP protocols, with storage options including Cassandra, PostgreSQL, HSQLDB, MySQL, and OpenSearch. Administration is available through JMX, REST, and a command line. James can operate as a Mail Transfer Agent using SMTP alone or as an IMAP Mail Delivery Agent. A distributed configuration leverages Cassandra, OpenSearch, RabbitMQ, and S3/Swift object storage, while a standalone version based on JPA targets single-server deployments. Releases are distributed as official binaries and Docker images under the Apache License 2.0, with professional support available from third-party companies.
