Apache UserGrid was an open-source Backend-as-a-Service stack for web and mobile applications, built around RESTful APIs. It aimed to reduce the amount of server-side code teams need to write by providing common backend services through a single API layer. The project has been retired and moved to the Apache Attic.

Its capabilities included user registration and management, groups, roles and permissions, OAuth 2.0 access, JSON data storage backed by Cassandra, SQL-like querying, entity relationships, full-text and geolocation search, queues, and file storage with content detection and URL access control. It offered SDKs for iOS, Android, HTML5/JavaScript, Node.js, Ruby, Java, .NET and PHP, and was built on standard Java components including Jersey, Jackson, Cassandra and Lucene. It was designed as a multi-tenant system deployable to public cloud environments or traditional server infrastructure.

UserGrid was intended for front-end developers building mobile and web applications without deep backend expertise, as well as architects and back-end teams seeking a distributed, extensible deployment. It was available as an open-source project under the Apache License, with no pricing, trial or edition information provided.
