The Programmers Solid 3D CAD Modeller
OpenSCAD is a free, open-source application for creating solid 3D CAD models, released under the General Public License version 2 and available for Linux/UNIX, Windows, and Mac OS X. Rather than functioning as an interactive modeller, it acts like a 3D compiler: it reads a script file describing an object and renders the model from that script, giving designers control over the modelling process and the ability to revise steps or create designs driven by configurable parameters.
The software supports two main modelling techniques: constructive solid geometry (CSG) and extrusion of 2D outlines. It can read AutoCAD DXF files for 2D paths and design parameters, and it reads and creates 3D models in STL and OFF formats. Its underlying technology includes Qt for the user interface, CGAL for CSG evaluation, and OpenCSG and OpenGL for CSG previews, along with boost, eigen, and glew. OpenSCAD is aimed at users working on CAD-oriented models such as machine parts rather than artistic or animated 3D work.
