Livebook

Automate code & data workflows with interactive notebooks

Visit Livebook

Livebook is an open-source tool for building interactive, collaborative code notebooks. Notebooks combine Markdown cells for prose with code cells that run Elixir, where each cell can access bindings defined in cells above it. Files are stored as .livemd, a subset of Markdown, so notebooks can be read, shared, and versioned with existing tooling. The tool addresses the need to replace scripts, manual steps, and outdated documentation with executable, shareable workflows.

Notebooks support interactive charts, tables, maps, and diagrams with inputs and controls, along with Smart cells for higher-level tasks such as database queries and machine learning. The code editor provides autocompletion, inline documentation, formatting, and keyboard shortcuts, and Livebook tracks notebook state to mark stale sections. Built-in integrations cover Elixir, Erlang, SQL, Python, Hugging Face, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, SQLite, Google BigQuery, Snowflake, VegaLite, MapLibre, Mermaid, Slack, Cloudflare Zero Trust, Google IAP, and Tailscale, with additional integrations published as open-source packages on Hex.pm.

Livebook runs locally via Livebook Desktop for Mac, Windows, and Linux, or on select cloud platforms including Hugging Face. It is free and open source.
