Org mode

Your life in plain text

Visit Org mode

Org mode is a GNU Emacs major mode for working with structured plain text. It provides a single file format for notes, documents, computational notebooks, literate programming, to-do lists, and project planning, with headings, folding, tables, and links forming the basic structure. Org files use the .org extension and the text/org mimetype, and plain text storage makes them suitable for syncing and version control.

Core capabilities include a table editor with spreadsheet-style formulas and CSV/TSV import, Org Babel for executing source blocks across many languages, and export to formats including HTML, LaTeX, and ODT. Publishing projects can combine multiple files and resources. Task management features include customizable TODO states, priorities, deadlines, scheduling, tags, clocking, and configurable agenda views. Capture templates add structured data from Emacs buffers or other applications. Extensibility is provided through Emacs Lisp, including custom link types and export backends.

Org is intended for individuals and teams using Emacs for writing, research, development, and planning. The full feature set is available in Emacs; third-party editors and mobile apps provide basic Org file support. Org is free and open source, with documentation in the manual and the Worg community wiki.
