Apache ZooKeeper

A high-performance coordination service for distributed applications.

Visit Apache ZooKeeper

Apache ZooKeeper is an open-source coordination service for distributed applications. It addresses shared-state problems in clusters by exposing naming, configuration management, synchronization, and group services through a hierarchical namespace modeled after a file system, with updates stamped by a monotonically increasing zxid for total ordering.

The service runs replicated across an ensemble of servers for fault tolerance, and includes a command-line client (zkCli.sh). Documented use cases include leader election, distributed locking, service discovery, configuration management, cluster membership tracking, and barrier synchronization. Security controls such as TLS transport encryption, digest/SASL/Kerberos/x509 authentication, and per-znode ACLs are available but must be explicitly enabled; the project is intended for deployment behind a firewall in a trusted network. It is used by systems such as Kafka, Hadoop, and HBase.

ZooKeeper is distributed as an Apache Software Foundation project under an open-source license, with documentation published for several release lines (3.9.x, 3.8.x, 3.7.x, and older versions). Community resources include mailing lists, a Slack channel, issue tracking, and a security reporting address.
