Static Web Server
Static content delivery with speed and reliability.
Static Web Server is an open source, cross-platform web server built specifically for delivering static websites and assets. It solves the problem of serving static content—such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images—with high performance and security, while remaining lightweight and easy to deploy. The server is designed to be a modern alternative to traditional static web servers, offering a single binary with no runtime dependencies.
The server includes support for HTTP/2 and TLS with automatic HTTPS redirects, on-demand compression using gzip, brotli, and zstd, and the ability to serve pre-compressed files directly from disk. It provides configurable Cache-Control and ETag headers, CORS with full preflight support, Basic Authentication for directory protection, and security headers with sensible defaults. Additional capabilities include SPA fallback for serving index.html on 404 errors, URL rewrites and redirects using glob patterns, virtual hosting for multiple sites, directory listing with sorting and JSON output, custom HTTP headers, Markdown content serving, and a health endpoint with Prometheus metrics. The server also offers in-memory caching, optional FIPS 140 validated cryptography, and support for Unix Domain Sockets. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Android, and WebAssembly, with native binaries for x86, x86_64, ARM, and ARM64 architectures, and Docker images based on scratch, Alpine, and Debian.
Static Web Server is aimed at developers and teams who need to deploy static websites or web assets in production environments. It is free and open source under the MIT and Apache-2.0 licenses, with no pricing or seat-based licensing. The server can be configured via CLI flags, environment variables, or a TOML file, and offers a zero-configuration quickstart by simply pointing it at a folder.
