OpenNMS is an open-source network monitoring platform for fault, performance, traffic monitoring, and alarm generation across local and distributed networks. It addresses the challenges of monitoring large, distributed environments where reachability, latency, and data volume complicate collection and processing. The platform is available as two distributions: Meridian, a subscription-based stable release, and Horizon, a free community release containing the newest features.
Core capabilities include inventory management, data collection over protocols such as SNMP, JMX, HTTP, and Prometheus, and traffic management supporting NetFlow, IPFIX, and sFlow. The platform includes Minion for remote monitoring, Sentinel for scalable data processing, the OpenNMS plugin for Grafana for dashboards, Newts for time-series storage, and ALEC, a community plugin that uses machine learning to group related alarms. Configuration is handled through the web UI or XML scripting, with customizable dashboards, reports, and topology maps.
OpenNMS is aimed at telecom and enterprise network operators managing complex infrastructure. The OpenNMS Group provides training, support, custom development, and consulting. Meridian subscriptions are tiered by cores, devices, and Minions, with support levels and SLAs varying by plan; add-ons include managed deployment, resident engineering, and 24/7 support.
