Monese is a mobile money account and card service operated as an Electronic Money Institution rather than a bank. It provides an app-based alternative for people who may find it difficult to open a traditional bank account, including foreign nationals, expats, freelancers, migrants and nomads. Accounts can be opened online in minutes, with verification completed through the app using a phone number, email address and ID, followed by a video selfie. Eligibility requires users to be aged 18 or above and living in the UK or one of the 30 countries in the European Economic Area.
The app supports spending, sending and saving across multiple currencies, with instant accounts, money pots for savings, joint accounts, budgeting tools and spending categories. Users can receive salary payments into their account, set up direct debits and standing orders, and access account details for payments. A contactless Mastercard debit card and travel card can be used online, in-store and at ATMs, with Apple Pay and Google Pay integration. International transfers are available to over 30 countries, alongside free transfers between Monese accounts and instant UK Faster Payments. Cash can be added at Post Office, PayPoint and Paysafecash locations. Security features include single-device access, biometric login and 3D Secure, with funds safeguarded under the EU Electronic Money Directive and UK Electronic Money Regulations. The app is available in eight languages, and pricing plans include Starter, Classic and Premium editions.
