Mercurial SCM

Work easier, Work faster

Visit Mercurial SCM

Mercurial is a free, distributed source control management tool for versioning files. Because every clone carries the full project history, committing, branching, merging, and diffing work locally without a central server or network access. The command set is designed to be consistent and approachable, with potentially dangerous actions gated behind extensions.

Core capabilities include fast operations on projects of any size, platform-independent binary releases for major operating systems, and extensibility through Python-based extensions that can alter existing commands, add new ones, or access core functionality. The implementation is mostly Python with a portable C portion for performance, and a growing Rust component. It is released as open source under the GNU General Public License Version 2 or later.

Mercurial is aimed at anyone working with versioned files, from individual developers to teams maintaining large repositories. It is distributed as free software with no paid editions, seats, or usage-based plans.
