Darcs is a free and open source, cross-platform version control system that tracks changes rather than snapshots. It does not require a central server and supports offline work, letting users record changes locally and push them to a remote repository later.
Key features include distributed repositories where each working directory is a repository, local patch editing before sending, easy branching and merging through push and pull, patch exchange by email, cherry-picking individual changes, and interactive selection of changes. Repositories can be hosted with hub.darcs.net or darcsweb. Installation is available via cabal, stack, Nix, or source tarball.
Darcs is suited to developers and teams working in distributed or offline environments, including contributors who send patches without commit privileges. It is released as free and open source software under a donation-supported model.
