Kate is a text editor built on KDE Frameworks and Qt for viewing and editing text files on Linux, Windows, and macOS. It handles multiple documents at once through tabs and horizontal or vertical split views, with session support, encoding and line-ending handling, bi-directional text rendering, network transparency for remote files, and scripting extensibility.

Features include syntax highlighting for over 400 languages, bracket matching, code folding, bookmarks, multi-cursor and multi-selection editing, rectangular block selection, Vi input mode, scriptable auto indentation, comment handling, and autocompletion with argument hints via the Language Server Protocol. Search and replace supports regular expressions, multiline patterns, and files across open documents or on disk. Plugins include an embedded terminal, SQL, build, GDB debugging, Replace in Files, and a preview plugin for Markdown, HTML, and SVG. Backups on save and swap files support recovery.

Kate is aimed at developers and general text editing, with configurable hotkeys and on-the-fly spell checking. It is available through the Microsoft Store on Windows, where updates are handled by the store.
