Hypothesis

Social annotation platform for higher education that lets students highlight and comment直接

Visit Hypothesis

Hypothesis is a social annotation platform that adds a collaborative layer over digital course materials inside the learning management system. It lets students highlight passages, ask questions, and respond to peers directly on the text, making reading activity visible to instructors rather than confined to private notes or separate discussion boards.

It supports annotation of web pages, PDFs, EPUB files, YouTube videos, images, and eTexts, including content from VitalSource and JSTOR. Annotations sync with LMS gradebooks, including Canvas SpeedGrader, and a reporting dashboard tracks engagement. The platform integrates via LTI 1.3 with Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L Brightspace, and Sakai, with single sign-on, centralized provisioning, and FERPA-compliant data handling. Security documentation includes SOC compliance, HECVAT, TX-RAMP, and Cloud Security Alliance CAIQ assessments.

Hypothesis is built for colleges and universities, faculty, students, and publishers or partners integrating annotation into courseware. It began in 2011 as an open-source project, and a free open web annotator remains available. Institutional deployment is offered through centralized licensing and provisioning; specific plan structures and pricing are not detailed on these pages.
