Etherpad

Real-time collaborative document editing for teams that need to work together.

Visit Etherpad

Etherpad is a real-time collaborative text editor built around visible authorship and complete revision history. Every keystroke is attributed to its author, and every change is preserved, with a timeslider that lets users scrub through a document's history character by character. It is designed for teams and institutions that need to know who wrote what and when, and that want to keep their documents on infrastructure they control. The software runs self-hosted, with no telemetry, an Apache 2.0 license, an open data format, and built-in full data export.

Etherpad supports a large plugin ecosystem covering comments, images, tables, drawing, video chat, mathematics, code highlighting, and authentication options such as OAuth, LDAP, and OpenID. AI support is available as an optional plugin pointed at a model of the user's choice, running on infrastructure they control, and can be swapped, run locally, or left disabled. Companion tools include desktop and mobile apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, a command-line client, a terminal editor, and a database abstraction layer supporting MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB, SQLite, and others. The project is maintained by a volunteer team and is available for self-hosting on Linux, macOS, and Windows, with installation requiring Git and Node.js.
