Fink

Bringing Unix open-source software to Darwin and macOS

Visit Fink

Fink is a project that ports Unix open-source software to Darwin and macOS, making it available as a coherent distribution. It addresses the limited set of command-line tools included with macOS by providing access to enhanced command-line utilities and graphical applications developed for Linux and other Unix variants. Fink manages a separate directory tree to avoid interfering with the base macOS system, allowing macOS to be updated without affecting installed Fink packages and vice versa.

Fink uses Debian package management tools, including dpkg, dselect, and apt-get, along with its own package manager, fink. The fink package manager acts as a build engine that downloads source code, applies patches, configures and builds the software, and produces binary .deb packages. Users can choose between precompiled binary packages or a fully automated build-from-source system. The dependency system ensures required libraries are present, and packages are installed in predictable locations. Fink supports macOS 10.15 through macOS 13 on both Intel (x86_64) and Apple Silicon (arm64) architectures, with Xcode required before installation. X11 support is optional through XQuartz. The project is available for free, with source code hosted on GitHub and project resources on SourceForge.
