collectd

The system statistics collection daemon

Visit collectd

collectd is a system statistics collection daemon that periodically gathers performance metrics from operating systems, applications, logfiles and external devices. It stores those values in formats such as RRD files or makes them available over the network, supporting monitoring, performance analysis and capacity planning.

The daemon is written in C for portability and performance, allowing it to run on systems without scripting languages or cron, including embedded devices such as OpenWrt routers. It includes more than 100 plugins covering standard and specialized collection cases, networking features for transmitting metrics, and extensibility through additional plugins. Monitoring support includes simple threshold checking, and a Nagios plugin can consume collectd's metrics. Graph generation is not included, though related tools and a sample script are available.

collectd is suited to system administrators and operators who need to collect and route performance data from diverse sources. It is available as free, open source software, with release versions including collectd 5.12.0 and collectd 6.0.0.rc3.
