Open source metrics and monitoring for systems and services
Prometheus is an open-source monitoring system and time series database for instrumenting, collecting, storing, and querying metrics from applications, systems, and services. It uses a dimensional data model in which time series are identified by a metric name and key-value pairs, supporting alerting, dashboarding, and related use cases.
Prometheus includes the PromQL query language for querying, correlating, and transforming time series data, plus a separate Alertmanager component that handles notifications and silencing based on PromQL alerting rules. Servers operate independently using local storage, and the Go-based statically linked binaries are deployed across environments. Official and community-contributed instrumentation libraries cover major languages, and hundreds of integrations extract metrics from existing systems. Prometheus integrates with Kubernetes and other cloud and container managers for service discovery.
It is intended for monitoring cloud native environments and is released under the Apache 2 License as an open-source, community-driven project with open governance as a CNCF graduated project.
