Citus Data

Distributed Postgres. At any scale.

Visit Citus Data

Citus is an open source extension to PostgreSQL that distributes data and queries across nodes, allowing a single database to handle both transactional and analytical workloads as data grows. It can start from a single node and expand to a distributed cluster, with the ability to add nodes and rebalance shards. Because it is an extension rather than a fork, it stays in sync with PostgreSQL releases and supports existing Postgres tooling and ecosystem.

Key capabilities include transparent sharding at the database layer, SQL query and transaction routing, and schema-based sharding for distributing regular schemas across machines. It supports multi-tenant SaaS applications by sharding on dimensions such as tenant or account, real-time analytics dashboards with real-time event ingestion and massively parallel updates and deletes, and microservices architectures where each service can own its schema in a shared distributed database.

Citus is available as free open source software that can be self-managed, and as a managed service on Microsoft Azure under Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL. The managed service is offered on a pay-as-you-use basis or with reserved capacity pricing, and can be provisioned starting from a single node.
