A distributed tracing system
Zipkin is a distributed tracing system for collecting and looking up timing data used to troubleshoot latency problems in service architectures. Trace data can be retrieved directly by trace ID or queried by service, operation name, tags, and duration. Summaries indicate the share of time spent in a service and whether operations failed, while a Dependency diagram shows which applications traced requests passed through, including error paths and calls to deprecated services.
Applications report trace data after being instrumented with a tracer or instrumentation library. Reporting commonly uses HTTP or Kafka, with other options including Apache ActiveMQ, gRPC, and RabbitMQ. Trace data is held in memory or persisted through a supported backend such as Apache Cassandra or Elasticsearch. Zipkin is open source, with source code and issue tracking on GitHub.
