XMPP
The universal messaging standard
XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) is an open XML-based protocol and set of standards for real-time communication, maintained by the XMPP Standards Foundation (XSF) and freely available since 1999. It addresses the need for interoperable messaging and presence across different systems, covering instant messaging, presence indicators, multi-party chat, voice and video calls, and generalized routing of XML data. Because it is an open standard, no single party owns it, and it is designed to be extended over time.
XMPP is used across instant messaging, the Internet of Things, online gaming, social applications, and WebRTC. Published specifications allow developers to integrate their own software, and XMPP-compatible clients are available for multiple platforms along with libraries for various programming languages. The XSF oversees the standards process, compliance suites, and community resources including mailing lists, chat logs, and events.
XMPP is intended for end users connecting through any compatible client, for developers building on the protocol, and for operators running services on the network. The protocol and specifications are freely available; no paid editions, trials, or seat-based or usage-based packaging are described.
