Window Detective

A programmer's tool to inspect and modify the properties of application windows.

Visit Window Detective

Window Detective is a programmer's tool for inspecting the windows of a running application. It lets you view and modify properties of a window, helping developers and testers understand how an application's interface is structured and how it behaves.

Key capabilities include viewing and setting window properties such as text/title, dimensions and styles, browsing all windows in a tree hierarchy of parent/child relationships, and picking windows to inspect with the mouse. It also offers advanced search to find windows matching specified criteria, listening for window messages sent to a window, and "Smart Settings" that remember user settings like window positions. The tool is translated into a number of languages.

Window Detective is distributed as source code and pre-compiled binaries available for download, and it runs without installation, though settings are not saved unless a specific registry key exists. Building the source requires Microsoft Visual Studio and the Qt framework.
