WebCite

On-demand archiving system for webreferences to ensure permanent access to cited webpages.

Visit WebCite

WebCite is an on-demand archiving system for cited webpages and other Internet-accessible digital objects, aimed at scholarly references in journal articles and books. It addresses the problem of cited URLs that disappear or change after publication, so readers can retrieve the content as the citing author saw it. A WebCite-enhanced reference includes the original live URL alongside a link to an archived snapshot.

Snapshots can be requested manually for a single URL or by uploading a citing manuscript, which is scanned for uncited URLs and rewritten with archived links. Retrieval works through opaque and transparent WebCite URLs, a URL-and-date query, a hash sum, or a DOI assigned to a snapshot; publishers can also submit citing manuscripts with a refdoi link. Readers can search the database by URL and date, with fuzzy date matching and a list of available snapshot dates. Archived material is mirrored by digital preservation partners, including the Internet Archive and libraries.

The service is intended for authors, editors, copyeditors, publishers, readers, and libraries or digital preservation organizations. Archiving for authors is free regardless of publication, and editors can register as members at no cost. The service is currently not accepting new archiving requests, though existing snapshots remain accessible and citable.
