Snikket

Snikket is an XMPP-based messaging platform for small groups such as families, friends, clubs and small organisations. It addresses the centralisation of mainstream messaging apps by using a network of smaller independent services that communicate with each other, so each person can choose a service they trust. Accounts are not tied to a phone number, address books are not uploaded, and data is not sold to advertisers.

Features include text messaging with typing and read indicators, photo, video and document sharing, voice messages, location sharing, private and public group chats, and encrypted audio and video calls. Conversations sync across multiple devices, and the app supports multiple accounts, secure encrypted backups, and end-to-end encryption. The server software is open source and can be self-hosted, with Snikket Hosting offered as a way to launch an instance. The project is funded through donations and paid accounts. It targets personal messaging rather than enterprise team chat, and its roadmap includes an SDK and a web client.
