OpenFOAM

Free, open-source software for computational fluid dynamics (CFD), distributed by The Open

Visit OpenFOAM

OpenFOAM is free, open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software written in C++ and licensed under the General Public Licence (GPL) v3. It calculates fluid motion and forces, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and chemistry in fluids and solids, serving as an alternative to experiments and approximate calculation methods for research, design and optimisation, safety calculations, and troubleshooting.

The software runs natively on Linux, packaged for Ubuntu, and also runs on Windows through the Windows Subsystem for Linux and on macOS using Canonical Multipass. Source packs, package repositories, and archived versions are available for download, along with a development version (OpenFOAM-dev). Documentation includes a User Guide, Technical Guides, a C++ Source Guide, and a CFD Book, and CFD training courses are offered in classroom and live virtual formats.

OpenFOAM is distributed exclusively free and open source by The OpenFOAM Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, with development and maintenance carried out by CFD Direct. It is used across chemical and process engineering, civil, mechanical, and other engineering disciplines. The Foundation runs annual funding campaigns and offers Maintenance Plans at three levels — Platinum, Gold, and Silver — for organisations wishing to support sustainability.
