Marmot
Open source context layer for AI agents and humans, cataloging data assets and making them
Marmot is an open-source data catalog that records what an organization's data is, what it means, and who owns it, then makes that context available to both employees and AI assistants through a single MCP server. It runs as one service alongside a Postgres database, deployable either self-hosted or through a managed cloud edition.
The platform covers assets, lineage, ownership, and a glossary, with search and query access via MCP server, web UI, REST API, and CLI. Management is available through CLI, Terraform, Pulumi, REST API, and SDK. Plugins connect to databases, warehouses, lakes, streams, and orchestrators, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, BigQuery, Trino, Kafka, Airflow, dbt, and Kubernetes. The MCP server lets AI agents retrieve catalog context directly rather than relying on manually supplied prompts.
Marmot is aimed at data teams and organizations needing governance and discoverability across their stack. The open-source edition is MIT licensed and free to self-host with all plugins included. Marmot Cloud, a managed hosting option with a free tier, automatic upgrades and backups, and built-in authentication, is in early development. Professional services for custom connectors, deployment, and architecture review are scoped per engagement.
