Liberapay is a recurrent donations platform run by a non-profit organization, designed to help people fund creators and projects working on free software, free knowledge, and other commons-oriented work. Donations are funded in advance, with donors choosing an amount, a period (weekly, monthly, or yearly), and a renewal method (manual or automatic). The platform does not take a cut of payments, though payment processing fees still apply.
Creators can create a profile, configure payment processing through Stripe or PayPal, and link accounts on GitHub, Mastodon, Twitter, and other platforms, as well as list repositories from GitHub and GitLab.com. Teams can receive and share money without setting up a legal entity. Liberapay supports pledging to people who have not yet joined, with no money collected until recipients claim their profile. The service is available in 29 languages and supports 132 currencies, though it does not handle cryptocurrency. By default, recipients do not know who their donors are, and weekly donations are capped per donor.
Liberapay is intended for creators, open-source contributors, and supporters of commons-oriented work. The platform is funded by donations to its own account rather than by taking a percentage of user payments.
