Greenkeeper

Automate your npm dependency management

Visit Greenkeeper

Greenkeeper was an automated npm dependency update service for GitHub repositories. It monitored npm releases and opened pull requests and issues when dependencies were outdated, helping teams keep JavaScript projects current without manually checking for updates. The standalone service shut down on June 3, 2020, and its dependency update functionality was rebuilt as part of Snyk.

Greenkeeper's core components included greenkeeper-lockfile, a change listener, and a GitHub webhooks service, all released as open source. The service integrated with GitHub repositories and npm packages, and users could configure it through greenkeeper.json and package.json files. Following the shutdown, users were invited to migrate to Snyk, which offers automated dependency updates alongside vulnerability and license scanning for open source dependencies and containers. Snyk provides a free plan for open source repositories and small organizations, with paid options for private repositories and advanced functionality.

Greenkeeper was developed by Neighbourhoodie Software GmbH, a Berlin-based team, and was originally created as a side project before being commercialized. The base software remains open source on GitHub.
