JanOS

Turn your phone into an IoT board.

Visit JanOS

JanOS is an operating system built to run on the chipset of a mobile phone without a screen, exposing phone functionality such as calling and the camera through JavaScript APIs. It is intended for embedded and Internet of Things projects that use a phone's mainboard as a development board, with GPIO ports available for attaching components such as LEDs.

Development uses a supported device list, ready-made builds or a self-built image, and an app template updated with make reset-phone. Native C/C++ binaries compiled for ARM with the Android NDK can be invoked through the mozOs.exec API, and debugging is handled with the WebIDE in Firefox Developer Tools. Power draw depends on the phone used, and a battery is generally required for booting and network operations. JanOS is a project from Telenor Digital.
