Gearman

A generic application framework for distributing work across machines or processes.

Visit Gearman

Gearman is an open-source job server framework for distributing work across machines or processes. It supports parallel processing, load balancing, and calling functions between different programming languages. A Gearman application consists of three parts: a client that creates jobs, a job server (gearmand) that routes them, and a worker that performs the work. The job server and client/worker APIs handle networking and job management over TCP sockets, allowing applications to focus on their own logic.

Gearman provides client and worker APIs for multiple languages, enabling heterogeneous applications where clients and workers can be written in different languages. Jobs can run in the foreground or in the background for asynchronous processing, and can be prioritized. The framework supports message sizes up to 4 gigabytes, with chunking for larger payloads. Multiple job servers can be configured for redundancy, with clients and workers failing over to an available server. The job server is written in C/C++ with a threaded design, and the project is licensed under BSD.

Gearman is intended for developers building distributed applications, including high-availability web sites and database replication event transport. It is open source and available at no cost. The project offers documentation, getting started guides, examples, and language-specific API references.
