FOLIO is an open source library services platform built by a collaboration of libraries, developers and vendors. It addresses the need for a modern, community-owned system for library resource management, giving libraries control over the capabilities and roadmap of the technology that powers their operations. The platform is designed to be modular and adaptable, covering both traditional and new resource management functionality.

The architecture is API driven, with the OKAPI API gateway at its core and the Stripes toolkit for building single-page web application UI modules. Functionality spans Metadata Management, Acquisitions, ERM, Circulation and Reporting, delivered through frequent flower releases. Integrations include OAI-PMH, Z39.50, NCIP, SIP2, KBART, EDIFACT, FTP, SSO (Shibboleth), OCLC, EBSCO Discovery Service, GOBI, ILLiad, VuFind and Blacklight. The platform uses microservices, message queues and containerization, with development carried out by teams working in synchronized sprints.

FOLIO is intended for libraries, developers, vendors, consortia and networks. Hosting and support options are available from multiple providers, and the project is sustained through organizational memberships at different levels based on organization size.
