ExchangeRate Host is a REST API service built and maintained by APILayer that provides current and historical foreign exchange rates and cryptocurrency exchange rates. It is designed for applications that need reliable currency data, delivered in JSON format and sourced from financial data providers and banks, including the European Central Bank. The service covers roughly 168 forex currencies and includes end-of-day historical rates spanning about 19 years.
The API includes endpoints for real-time rates, historical rates, single-currency conversion, and time-series data, with HTTPS encryption and rate-limit usage statistics returned in response headers. Requests are cached by default, and an optional parameter can request the actual date. The service is part of the APILayer suite, where one account, API key, dashboard, and bill cover multiple APIs.
Pricing is subscription-based with monthly or yearly billing. A free plan offers 100 requests per month for non-commercial use. Paid tiers include Basic, Professional Plus, and Business, each with increasing monthly request allowances, update frequency, and features such as commercial use, currency conversion, time-frame queries, and currency-change queries. A custom Enterprise option is available for unlimited requests and dedicated technical support.
