Surplus Lines Tax API is a REST service that calculates surplus lines taxes and related charges for excess and surplus insurance placements across all 50 U.S. states, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. It replaces manual rate lookups by returning itemized breakdowns of state premium tax, stamping office fees, fire marshal taxes, regulatory surcharges, and other jurisdiction-specific charges, along with legislative source references for verification.
The API exposes three endpoints: /v1/calculate for tax calculations by state and premium, /v1/rates for current rates by state, and /v1/states for supported postal codes. Responses are JSON, with code examples available in cURL, Python, JavaScript, and PHP. Integrations are offered through Zapier, Make.com, n8n, Excel, and an MCP server, and a free online calculator is available for one-off calculations without an account.
The service is aimed at surplus lines brokers, insurance agencies, MGAs and MGUs, and InsurTech platforms. Pricing is pay-as-you-go per query, with a free tier that includes 100 queries and no credit card required, plus a monthly minimum and an initial deposit credited to the account balance.
