dwm
A dynamic window manager for X that manages windows in tiled, monocle and floating layouts
dwm is a dynamic window manager for X that arranges windows in tiled, monocle, and floating layouts, switching them as needed for the application in use. In tiled layout, windows are split into a master area for the focused window and a stacking area for the rest; monocle maximizes each window to the screen; floating allows free resizing and movement, with dialogs always floating. Windows are grouped by tags, and each screen shows a status bar with tags, layout, window count, focused window title, and root window name text.
dwm is a single binary customized by editing its source code in C, with no separate configuration format. It creates a view for each Xinerama screen, draws a customizable focus border, and can display arbitrary status text such as date, load, or battery charge. The optional dmenu tool can extend it with a menu. It is distributed as source under the MIT/X Consortium license, with a downloadable release and a git repository; some distributions provide binary packages. Support is available through a tutorial, FAQ, mailing list, and IRC channel.
