Xfce

A lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems

Visit Xfce

Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems, designed to run fast while using few system resources. It follows the UNIX philosophy of modularity and re-usability: components are packaged separately so users can assemble their preferred working environment. Xfce adheres to freedesktop.org standards and can be installed on several UNIX platforms, including Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, Cygwin and MacOS X.

Its core modules include a Window Manager for window placement, decorations and workspaces; a Desktop Manager for backgrounds, desktop icons and a windows list; a Panel for launching applications and switching workspaces; a Session Manager for login and power management; an Application Finder; a File Manager with a bulk renamer; and a Settings Manager for keyboard shortcuts, appearance and display settings. Additional applications and plugins extend the desktop, including a terminal emulator, text editor, sound mixer, image viewer, iCal-based calendar and a CD and DVD burning application.
