Apache Velocity

Java-based template engine for separating presentation from application code

Visit Apache Velocity

Apache Velocity is a Java-based template engine that lets developers reference Java objects through a simple template language. It separates web page markup from Java code, following the Model-View-Controller pattern, so designers and programmers can work independently. Beyond web pages, templates can generate SQL, PostScript and XML, and the engine can run as a standalone utility for producing source code and reports or as an integrated component in other systems.

The project consists of two main components: Velocity Engine, the templating engine itself, and Velocity Tools, which provides supporting infrastructure for web and non-web applications, including Struts integration and the standalone VelocityViewServlet. Template loading is configured through template loaders defined in velocity.properties or in the webapp descriptor, and a SecureUberspector helper class is available to help restrict classes exposed in the context. Releases are distributed as combined source/binary archives in tar.gz and zip formats.

Velocity is aimed at Java developers and web teams building applications that follow the MVC model, as well as those needing template-driven generation outside of web contexts. It is a project of the Apache Software Foundation, released under the Apache Software License and available free of charge.
