Sonic Pi
Your free code-based music creation and performance tool.
Sonic Pi is a free, code-based tool for creating and performing music. Users write code to compose and perform, using algorithms to control synths, scales, chords, samples and effects. It runs as a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, and also in the browser with no installation required. The project began as a research project at Cambridge University in collaboration with Raspberry Pi and is now independent, open source and community supported.
The tool includes live loops, synths, samples and effects, with deterministic randomness so a program plays the same way each time. Synths are controlled through code, with documentation pages covering their keys and dials. The desktop app supports gamepad input, live audio in and out, well-timed MIDI and OSC, and Ableton Link and Link Audio, with low-latency audio through ASIO, Core Audio and PipeWire. The browser version supports gamepad input, multichannel live audio and stereo output, but not well-timed MIDI, OSC or Link. Sonic Pi is free and open source, with no paid editions or usage-based pricing described.
