ScratchJr

Coding for young children.

Visit ScratchJr

ScratchJr is an introductory programming language for children ages 5–7, designed to let them create interactive stories and games by snapping together graphical programming blocks. It addresses the challenge of making coding accessible to young children who are not yet ready for text-based languages, supporting problem-solving, project design, sequencing, and creative expression through a visual, block-based interface.

The app includes a paint editor for modifying characters, the ability to add custom voices and sounds, and support for inserting photos. It runs as a free app on iPads, Android tablets, and Chromebooks. The project is accompanied by the Coding as Another Language (CAL) curriculum, the Official ScratchJr Book, and a set of 75 ScratchJr Coding Cards, with an activity book announced as forthcoming. ScratchJr is available at no cost, with no paid editions or usage-based pricing described.
