Redox OS

Complete Unix-like microkernel-based operating system written in Rust

Visit Redox OS

Redox OS is a complete Unix-like operating system built on a microkernel and written in Rust, aimed at security, reliability and safety. It is positioned as an alternative to Linux and BSD for both cloud and desktop use, offering source compatibility with existing programs and a set of system tools.

The system includes a Rust-written kernel and drivers running in userspace, with OS services provided via Schemes. It supports Intel/AMD (32 and 64-bit), ARM (64-bit) and RISC-V CPUs, boots from NVMe, SATA, IDE and USB with full disk encryption, and uses a ZFS-inspired file system. GUI support covers a Rust-written windowing system and compositor, with compatibility for X11, GTK3, Iced, Slint, egui, winit, softbuffer, SDL2 and SDL1, plus OpenGL and Vulkan rendering through Mesa3D. POSIX, Linux and BSD source compatibility is provided alongside GCC and LLVM compiler support.

Redox OS is distributed as open source under MIT licensing, with a downloadable image and release notes available for each version. It targets developers and users seeking a Rust-based Unix-like system for desktop or cloud environments.
