Nihongo

A modern Japanese dictionary and study tool for iPhone and iPad.

Visit Nihongo

Nihongo is a Japanese dictionary and study app for iPhone and iPad that brings lookup, reading practice, and vocabulary review into one place. It covers word, kanji, and example sentence search, with entries marked by commonality, and lets users paste Japanese text into clippings where each word links to its definition and furigana is added.

Features include Photo Lookup (OCR) for looking up words from a photo, a Safari extension that adds furigana or romaji to web pages with inline definitions, handwriting and radical search, conjugation tables, stroke order guides, and kanji histories. Flashcards are generated automatically from clippings and dictionary history, using spaced repetition, with kanji drawing practice and export to Anki/TSV. Audio pronunciations and an optional Pitch Accents add-on are also available.

The free tier includes the offline dictionary, handwriting search, conjugation tables, stroke order guides, and clippings limited to 250 characters. Nihongo Pro, offered as monthly, annual, or lifetime purchases, adds Photo Lookup, spaced-repetition flashcards, audio pronunciations, Safari integration, kanji histories, and full clippings. Pitch Accents is sold separately as an add-on.
