ModSecurity is an open-source, cross-platform web application firewall engine maintained under the OWASP Foundation. It gives web application defenders visibility into HTTP(S) traffic and provides a rules language and API for implementing protections. The engine is paired with the OWASP Core Rule Set (CRS), and the project publishes releases for both its 2.x and 3.x lines.

Capabilities include real-time application security monitoring and access control, full HTTP traffic logging, continuous passive security assessment, and web application hardening. ModSecurity is distributed as a WAF module and is used alongside web servers and by commercial WAF vendors; it is available under an open-source model with no paid editions or seat-based plans described.
