Insomnia is an open-source API development platform for designing, testing, debugging, and mocking HTTP, REST, GraphQL, gRPC, SOAP, and WebSocket APIs, along with MCP servers. It addresses the need to keep API definitions current and consistent across teams by supporting local, Git, or cloud storage workflows, with optional end-to-end encryption and organization-level storage policies.
Key capabilities include an OpenAPI design editor with linting and live preview, native API mocking generated from collections, specs, responses, or natural language descriptions, and automated collection testing with pre- and post-request scripting. The MCP client lets users connect servers, inspect tools and resources, and run them with custom parameters. AI features include bring-your-own-LLM support (Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or local models), autogenerated mocks from plain language, and AI-assisted Git commit messages. The Inso CLI supports CI/CD validation and linting of OpenAPI specs, and Kong Konnect integration syncs an API catalog as the source of truth for endpoint discovery.
Insomnia is packaged in three editions: a free Essentials plan, a seat-based Pro plan, and a seat-based Enterprise plan with SSO, SCIM, vault integrations, and enterprise support. A 14-day trial of Enterprise features is available, and a local-only Scratch Pad requires no login.
