Grist is a general-purpose spreadsheet, database and app-building tool that organizes data in tables, links related records, and analyzes and visualizes it in spreadsheet-style views. It is designed for business, personal and community projects, including workflows that have outgrown conventional spreadsheets. The platform can be used as a fully managed service or self-hosted on your own infrastructure, and it is also available as open-source software.
Core capabilities include drag-and-drop layouts with tables, cards, charts and custom widgets; forms and surveys; pivot tables and linked charts; and formulas using Excel functions or the standard Python library. An AI Assistant can answer questions about relational data and formulas, and create or modify records and formulas. Access rules control visibility down to individual rows and columns, and can be shared with third parties in limited form. Grist connects to external systems through a REST API, webhooks and integrators, and supports custom widgets. It offers automatic backups, snapshot history, conditional formatting, and localization.
Grist is aimed at individuals and teams without a software engineering background, as well as technical users who extend it with Python, APIs and custom widgets. It is offered with a full-featured free plan, and can be self-hosted for intranet operation or compliance. Professional services, custom solutions and training workshops are also available.
