Converse is an open-source, web-based XMPP chat client that can be embedded as an overlay or widget, or used as a full-page application. It provides direct messages, group chats, and end-to-end encrypted messaging, and can connect to any XMPP server, including public servers that allow in-band registration.
The client includes chat statuses, desktop notifications, URL previews, multi-user chatrooms, room invitations, vCard support, service discovery, typing and chat state notifications, file sharing via HTTP File Upload, message archiving, client state indication, OMEMO encryption, message styling, anonymous logins, and message corrections, retractions, and moderation. It uses a plugin architecture for customization and is available as a plugin or add-on module for the Openfire, Prosody, and ejabberd XMPP servers. It has been integrated into applications including Peertube, Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware, Elgg, Roundcube, WordPress, and ConverseJS for Ubuntu-Touch.
Converse is aimed at developers, communities, organizations, and businesses that need secure, customizable messaging. It is licensed under MPLv2, with documentation and community support available. Professional support and custom development are offered by Opkode.
