AppleJack

Menu-based troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X.

Visit AppleJack

AppleJack is a command-line troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X that runs in Single User Mode, intended for situations where the graphical interface cannot load or a startup disk is unavailable. It provides a menu-based interface for performing recovery tasks without needing another startup disk.

The tool can repair the disk, repair permissions, validate system preference files, and clear possibly corrupted cache files. It can also be run in an automatic mode that performs all tasks, with an option to restart the computer afterward. A man page and ReadMe document cover usage, and the installer sets up the script for access from Single User Mode.

AppleJack is aimed at Mac users needing to recover a machine when normal startup fails, rather than as a general-purpose maintenance tool. It is distributed as free software through SourceForge and MacUpdate, with current versions supporting Mac OS X 10.4 and later and a separate 1.4.x series for 10.2 and 10.3. Uninstallation is available through a built-in command or a provided script.
