Apache Zeppelin

Web-based notebook for data-driven, interactive analytics and collaborative documents

Visit Apache Zeppelin

Apache Zeppelin is a web-based notebook for interactive data analytics and collaborative documents. It supports SQL, Scala, Python, R and more, with built-in Apache Spark integration, 20+ interpreters, data visualization, dynamic forms, and real-time notebook sharing. It is Apache 2.0 licensed open-source software.

Zeppelin supports Spark, PySpark, Spark R, Spark SQL with dependency loader, and connects to JDBC data sources such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Redshift, and Apache Hive. Python is supported with Matplotlib, Conda, Pandas SQL, and PySpark integrations. The interpreter concept allows any language or data-processing backend to be plugged in, including Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Python, R, JDBC, Markdown, and Shell. Built-in Apache Spark integration provides automatic SparkContext and SQLContext injection, runtime jar dependency loading from local filesystem or Maven repository, and job cancellation with progress display. Visualizations include six built-in chart types, with output from any language backend recognized and visualizable, plus a pivot chart with drag-and-drop aggregation. Dynamic forms generate input forms in notebooks. Notebooks and paragraphs can be shared via URL with real-time change broadcasting, and result-only pages can be embedded as iframes.

Zeppelin is packaged as open-source software under the Apache 2.0 license, with releases available for download and no stated pricing. It supports single-user local Spark deployments and multi-user deployments with LDAP authentication, including YARN cluster configuration. Operators can run interpreters in Docker containers or on Kubernetes, where interpreter pods are created and Spark is auto-configured for Spark on Kubernetes in client mode. Apache Shiro authentication can be configured for network access, with note-level owner, reader, writer, and runner permissions applied through the UI, REST APIs, and WebSocket APIs. Interpreter user impersonation is available for per-user OS identity separation.
