Apache Superset is an open-source data exploration and visualization platform that connects to SQL-based databases, including cloud-native engines, without requiring a separate ingestion layer. It addresses the need for self-serve analytics by letting users explore data through either a no-code visualization builder or a SQL IDE, then organize findings into interactive dashboards.
Its capabilities include a chart builder, SQL Lab, dashboards, and a semantic layer for SQL data transformations. Superset ships with more than 40 pre-installed visualization types and supports custom visualizations through a plug-in architecture. Additional features include drag-and-drop and SQL query support, data caching, Jinja templating, dashboard filters, CSS templates, cross-filters, drill-to-detail and drill-by analysis, virtual datasets, and feature flags. Authentication and authorization are handled through Flask AppBuilder, with built-in roles such as Admin, Alpha, Gamma, sql_lab, and Public for managing permissions.
Superset is intended for analysts, business users, administrators, and developers. It is packaged as open-source software, with documentation organized into user, administrator, and developer guides.
