Apache Struts is a free, open-source MVC framework for building Java web applications. It favors convention over configuration and is extensible through a plugin architecture, with bundled plugins for REST, AJAX and JSON. The project publishes security bulletins and guidance covering topics such as OGNL expression injection protection, parameter annotation requirements, access restrictions and production configuration.
The framework includes Struts Core, a plugin registry, Maven archetypes, tag libraries and an IntelliJ IDEA plugin, along with documentation covering getting started, security, core and tag development. Security features include the Struts OGNL Guard, sandboxed OGNL evaluation, accepted/excluded patterns, strict method invocation, resource isolation using Fetch Metadata, and cross-origin isolation via COOP and COEP. Releases are published as GA versions on separate 6.x and 7.x lines, with end-of-life versions documented.
